RedTape: "IDEAS ART FREE," artist talk presented by Meat Market Gallery

UPDATE: Jeffry Cudlin, Director of Exhibitions at the Arlington Arts Center, not only gave an excellent introduction to my work, performance art and the conceptual art genre in general at the talk, but he also reflected on his experience at his blog, Hatchets and Skewers.

In the first event of the RedTape series, we are proud to present a discussion with DC-based artist Kathryn Cornelius entitled, IDEAS ART FREE. The conversation will focus on several bodies of work spanning the last five years of her career, and the philosophies that drive her vision.

The talk will begin with an introduction by Jeffry Cudlin, Director of Exhibitions at the Arlington Arts Center.  Cudlin, also an artist, has written extensively about the artist’s work, and has remarked the following: "Cornelius is known for [art] pieces that create a strange, phantom territory at the edges of the art world:  From offering massages at one art fair; to staging a faux red carpet event at another; to masquerading as a one-woman arts corridor cleaning company, Cornelius is often darkly funny, never boring, and typically whip-smart."

RedTape was created to promote the work of local cutting edge artists by sharing with new audiences a focused and comprehensive background behind the art that is formed out of their passions and ideologies.  The setting is a formal, yet intimate approach to the viewing of a single artist’s work, and provides the artists an opportunity to explain their work in depth; such a structured discussion gives the audience a more interactive approach to experiencing the art itself.
