live performance with string

duration: variable
location: an art collector's home

description:  For weeks prior to the performance I memorized a text I had written a few months prior. During the performance I wore a simple black, floor-length dress and recited the text in a monologue fashion, with the exhibition visitors as silent audience members.  Before beginning the monologue, I tied one end of a ball of yellow yarn around my left index finger.  As I was speaking, I wound the yarn around and around my finger, forming a sculptural mass.  Just before the last paragraph of text, I repeated the phrase “never get made” over and over, as I unwound with fury the wrapped string off of my finger.  I stopped repeating the phrase after all the string was unwound.  I delivered the last paragraph of text.  I dropped the ball of yarn on the floor, keeping the string tied to my finger as I exited through the front door of the house, trailing the string behind me and walking to its end.
